Improving the Safety of Medication Administration: A Focus on Nursing Best Practices Using Automated Dispensing Cabinets

Automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) are rapidly becoming the system of choice for dispensing medications. ADCs have helped solve many problems for nurses, including eliminating time-consuming narcotic counts, delays in medication availability, and missing doses, while also improving the safety of medication administration. The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) worked with clinical experts to create a "Guidance on the Interdisciplinary Safe Use of ADCs". A previous webcast focused primarily on the pharmacy aspects of ADCs, including managing the inventory, identifying discrepancies and possible diversion and maximizing the safe use of the cabinets.

In this webcast, the focus will be on the nursing aspects of cabinet use in the medication administration process. Using the ISMP Guidance and experience of our expert faculty, the webcast will help address Joint Commission concerns and accreditation findings, identify common sources of medication errors and provide tips on maximizing the safe use of ADCs by the nursing staff. In addition, the faculty will address specific questions from the participating audience.
